TEAM SELECTION

Team Selection Overview

At The Borough of Harrow Swimming Club (BHSC), we participate in a variety of team galas, including both friendly and league competitions. The league galas are a significant part of the club’s competitive calendar, and we are proud to compete in two main leagues:

  • Junior League
  • National Arena League

As a club, we take pride in competing in Division 1 of these prestigious leagues. This is a tremendous achievement for a smaller town club, and being selected to represent BHSC in these galas is an honor. Selection for these events is something every swimmer should be proud of.

Team Selection Criteria

Team selection is primarily based on swimmer rankings, but coaches may apply discretion to ensure we field the strongest team for each gala. Here are some key factors in the selection process:

  • Performance: Selection is generally based on swimmer rankings and performance in recent competitions.
  • Coach’s Discretion: Coaches may adjust selections to ensure the best possible team composition for a specific gala or event.
  • Participation: We aim to ensure each swimmer has at least two swims, but in certain cases, swimmers may be selected for only one event if it provides a significant team advantage.

Team Expectations

Swimmers selected to represent The Borough of Harrow Swimming Club in any team gala are expected to fulfill the following commitments:

  • Team Support: Swimmers must stay for the entire event to support their teammates until the last race. This is a key factor in promoting team spirit and will be taken into account for future selections.
  • Club Priority: Selected swimmers are expected to give priority to the club over “social” events. League galas, such as the National Arena League and the MKJL Junior League, must take precedence over individual open meets or other events.
  • Training Commitment: Swimmers are required to attend all scheduled training sessions leading up to the gala, as requested by their coach. Participation in all programmed activities is also mandatory. Swimmers unable or unwilling to meet these commitments may be withdrawn from the team.

BHSC Code of Conduct

All selected swimmers must adhere to the BHSC Code of Conduct for Swimmers. A breach of the code may result in de-selection from the team. The code promotes respect, dedication, and sportsmanship, and it ensures that every swimmer represents the club with pride and integrity.

Relay Assignments for Championships

Swimmers selected to compete at County, Regional, or National Championships may be required to participate in assigned relay teams. The club expects full cooperation from swimmers for relay events, and the Club will not accept individual entries from swimmers who refuse to participate in relays at the same competition.

What If I’m Selected But Unavailable?

If you are selected for a gala and are unable to attend, it is crucial to inform your coach as soon as possible, along with the reason for your unavailability. Being unavailable for a league gala impacts not only the club but also your teammates. Swimmers are expected to make every effort to be available for these important league events.

  • Failure to attend or lack of availability will be considered in future team selections and squad movements.
  • Exceptional circumstances are always taken into account, so it’s important to communicate with your coach about any unavoidable conflicts.

The Importance of Team Galas

Team galas, particularly league events, are highly significant to BHSC’s success and reputation. Participating in these events fosters team unity, improves competitive experience, and reflects our commitment to the club’s long-term goals. The importance of these galas should be recognized, and swimmers are encouraged to give their full commitment to representing the club at these prestigious competitions.
