Welcome to the Borough of Harrow Swimming Club Learn to Swim School, where we help swimmers of all ages and abilities develop essential swimming skills. Our program follows the Swim England Learn to Swim Framework, a nationally recognized pathway designed to build confidence and proficiency in the water.

Our 8 Swimming Stages

Our Learn to Swim School is built around 8 progressive stages, providing a comprehensive pathway to develop essential swimming skills:

  1. Stage 1 – Water Confidence: Introducing swimmers to the water, focusing on basic floating, movement, and safety skills.
  2. Stage 2 – Basic Skills: Learning basic movement, floating, and kicking techniques, while emphasizing water safety.
  3. Stage 3 – Stroke Introduction: Introduction to basic strokes such as front crawl and backstroke, with an emphasis on breathing and body position.
  4. Stage 4 – Stroke Development: Swimmers begin refining their strokes, focusing on improving techniques for front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke.
  5. Stage 5 – Stroke Improvement: Swimmers develop greater endurance and efficiency in their strokes while learning new skills, such as tumble turns.
  6. Stage 6 – Advanced Skills: Focused on advanced stroke technique, stamina, and learning starts, turns, and finishes for competitive swimming.
  7. Stage 7 – Competitive Preparation: Further refinement of strokes and skills, preparing swimmers for competitive swimming with a focus on speed and endurance.
  8. Stage 8 – Pre-Competition Training: This final stage sharpens the technical aspects of all strokes, preparing swimmers for entry into competitive squads and galas.

Upon completing Stage 8, swimmers are encouraged to join our Competitive Squads to continue their development and participate in swimming competitions.

Who Can Join?

Our Learn to Swim School welcomes:

  • Children: Starting from age 4.5 years old, we offer a fun and supportive environment for young swimmers.
  • Adults: Our adult beginner lessons are perfect for those looking to improve their water confidence and swimming skills.

What does my child need to bring to lessons?
Please bring swimwear, a towel, goggles, and a swim cap if desired. We provide all other necessary equipment.

How are swimmers assessed?
Instructors continuously assess swimmers and provide feedback, moving them to the next stage when they are ready.

Can parents watch the lessons?
Yes! We ask parents to observe from designated viewing areas to support their child’s learning.

Swimming lessons teach children the importance of practice, patience, and discipline. The structured learning process encourages focus, goal setting, and perseverance—skills that are valuable both in sports and in life.

"Joining a swim school is an exciting step, but it can also feel a bit overwhelming with new routines, pools, and experiences. To help you get off to the best start, we’ve compiled helpful information about our swimming lessons."
  • At the Borough of Harrow Swimming Club, the health and safety of your children and our staff are our highest priorities. In line with government guidelines, we have implemented strict measures to ensure that your children can continue to enjoy their swimming lessons in a safe and supportive environment.We will do our best to keep your child’s lessons at the same time and day as before. Should we need to move your child to a different class, we will inform you promptly after receiving your booking. If the alternative class does not suit you, we will happily offer a full refund.Children’s Lessons:Children’s Learn to Swim lessons are scheduled as follows:
    • Monday: 7:05 PM and 7:35 PM
    • Wednesday: 7:05 PM and 7:35 PM
    • Friday: 7:00 PM and 7:30 PM
    • Saturday: 8:00 AM, 8:30 AM, 9:00 AM, and 9:30 AM
    • Pre-Squad: Friday 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM

    All children’s lessons take place at Harrow Leisure Centre.

    Adult Lessons:

    We offer the following sessions for adults:

    • Mixed classes (beginners and intermediates): Every Monday 8:05 PM to 9:05 PM
    • Ladies only (beginners): Every Wednesday 8:05 PM to 9:05 PM

    Important Information:

    Please take a moment to review our Code of Conduct and Financial Policies, which can be found on this website under the “About” section. These documents outline our expectations for swimmers and parents.

    How to Enroll:

    • For current members:
      To enroll, please log in to your Club Organiser account at www.cluborganiser.co.uk. Scroll down to the “Account Payment” section and follow the link to pay and secure your place.
      If you have lost your account login details, please email zak@harrowswim.com for assistance.
    • For new members:
      If you are new to the club or have not swum with us before, please contact us once bookings open by calling 07900 605518 or emailing admin@harrowswim.com. In your email, please include your name, date of birth, swimming level, and your preferred day and time for lessons.

    Bookings for Spring Term 2024:

    • For new members:
      Bookings will open on 7th December 2024 and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Stage 1-7 term’s and pre-squad fees:

Monday classes £130 for 13 weeks term. One lesson a week. lesson duration 30 minutes. No classes on Bank Holiday.

Wednesday, Friday and Saturday  classes £140 for 14 weeks term. One lesson a week. lesson duration 30 minutes.

Adults term’s fees:

Monday classes £195 for 13 weeks term. One lesson a week. lesson duration 60 minutes. No classes on Bank Holiday.

Wednesday and Friday classes £210 for 14 weeks term. One lesson a week. lesson duration 60 minutes.

Please note: lessons missed or cancelled cannot be refunded, made up or transferred to other swimmers, including siblings.

 

LEARN TO SWIMSTAGES OUTCOMES

Learn to Swim Stage 1: Water Confidence and Safety

Goal:
To introduce beginners to the water in a fun and safe environment, helping them develop confidence and basic movement skills.

Key Outcomes:

  • Enter and exit the pool safely.
  • Move around the pool using various methods, such as walking, hopping, and jumping.
  • Float on both front and back with support.
  • Blow bubbles in the water and submerge face comfortably.
  • Develop confidence to move independently in the water (with assistance if needed).
  • Understand basic water safety rules.

Learn to Swim Stage 2: Water Movement and Safety

Goal:
To build upon Stage 1 by increasing independence in the water and introducing controlled movements.

Key Outcomes:

  • Travel in the water without support for a short distance.
  • Jump into the water safely from the poolside.
  • Glide in a streamlined position on front and back.
  • Rotate from front to back and back to front to regain standing.
  • Float without support for a short duration.
  • Develop basic push and glide techniques from the wall.

Learn to Swim Stage 3: Basic Stroke Development

Goal:
To introduce basic swimming strokes and build confidence in swimming independently.

Key Outcomes:

  • Swim a minimum of 5 meters on both front and back without assistance.
  • Submerge fully and retrieve objects from the pool floor.
  • Demonstrate basic kicking techniques for front crawl and backstroke.
  • Perform a push and glide from the wall with correct body positioning.
  • Begin to coordinate breathing with strokes.

Learn to Swim Stage 4: Stroke Improvement and Breathing Techniques

Goal:
To develop stronger and more controlled swimming strokes with a focus on breathing and body positioning.

Key Outcomes:

  • Swim 10 meters with improved front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke techniques.
  • Demonstrate proper arm and leg coordination in all strokes.
  • Perform rhythmic breathing while swimming front crawl.
  • Develop basic dolphin kicks for butterfly.
  • Tread water for 20-30 seconds.
  • Perform a seated dive safely.

Learn to Swim Stage 5: Stroke Refinement and Endurance

Goal:
To refine and improve swimming strokes and introduce new skills for deeper water confidence.

Key Outcomes:

  • Swim 25 meters proficiently using front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke.
  • Introduce butterfly stroke techniques.
  • Develop effective breathing patterns for all strokes.
  • Perform a forward roll in the water.
  • Tread water for up to one minute.
  • Perform a headfirst dive safely from the poolside.

Learn to Swim Stage 6: Advanced Stroke Skills and Competitive Techniques

Goal:
To introduce advanced techniques, including starts, turns, and competitive swimming skills.

Key Outcomes:

  • Swim 50 meters using proficient front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.
  • Perform tumble turns for front crawl and backstroke.
  • Execute effective starts for all strokes.
  • Demonstrate correct stroke techniques for all four strokes with improved breathing control.
  • Perform a somersault in the water.
  • Swim 10 meters using an efficient butterfly stroke.

Learn to Swim Stage 7: Pre-Competitive Swimming Skills

Goal:
To prepare swimmers for competitive swimming by introducing more advanced skills and refining techniques.

Key Outcomes:

  • Swim 100 meters using all four strokes with efficient technique.
  • Perform competitive starts and turns for each stroke.
  • Swim continuously for 200 meters with consistent pace and stroke technique.
  • Perform a front crawl and backstroke tumble turn.
  • Demonstrate an effective underwater phase for all strokes.
  • Introduce pace clock usage to swim at a set pace.

Learn to Swim Stage 8: Pre-Competition Training

Goal:
To refine technical and competitive swimming skills in preparation for joining competitive squads.

Key Outcomes:

  • Swim 400 meters using proficient technique in all four strokes.
  • Complete a race start and finish with accuracy.
  • Demonstrate a strong underwater phase for front crawl, backstroke, and butterfly.
  • Perform multiple tumble turns efficiently.
  • Swim at set speeds using a pace clock.
  • Begin participating in club galas or competitions.
